Most of the time my first response to this is “I have no idea”. And at that moment in time this is absolutely true. It is my default response…
You too? Huh. Good news: we aren’t alone then.
A little while ago I did a longform post on socials about procrastination. Top and bottom of it was that procrastination is a sign that you are missing support.
Now, that support may be human support…
Someone to help you navigate through the technicalities of a task or a little reassurance that it will be okay. It might be that you need someone to hold you to this first step, and not to worry about the million potential outcomes for it.
It might be physical support…
Do you need another bit of technology to get you through? It is you need to move into another space to get the environment you need to concentrate? Or do you need some parallel play/ body doubling (Sitting with other people who are also working on their own thing) to help you focus?
Or… It may be you need to support yourself through self-care…
When was the last time you went for a pee? Ate something? Went outside? Had a break? Told yourself that you got this. That you believe in yourself. That it is safe for you to take this next step.
I’d like to offer you an invitation for the next time you procrastinate ask yourself: what do I need?
Then give yourself the permission to take 2 minutes to listen to the answer.
Whether you pay attention to it, is up to you.
I’ve noticed that my clients and I find that we usually know the answer; even if we don’t like it.
If you need me to tell you it is safe to take the next step… drop into my inbox and let’s have a chat. I’m here to help.
Have an awesome day.
I believe in you.
